Equal Rights Under the Law
Let’s get something straight for once and for all! Pro-lifers are not second class citizens. On August 10, 2010 there was another Face the Truth tour in Rockford. This is an annual event conducted by the Pro Life Action League and the Rockford Life Initiative; it is a program designed to show the community how evil abortion really is.
Pro life citizens exercise their rights to free speech and assembly by showing pictures of the results of abortion on demand. Up to a point, all went well and according to plan. Some pro-abort supporters decided to act as vigilantes and act outside the law by showing their lack of respect for the rights of pro-life citizens and conducted themselves in an out of control manner. There were attacks on pro-life citizens verbally and physically. Some were doused with hot coffee, flipped off with gestures, cursed at, and bottles were thrown at the defenders of life. In one incident a man even tried to rip off a pro-life citizen’s mobile security camera.
Showing their lack of training and understanding of the law, a police officer told a pro-lifer that he had no right to tape the assault. On several occasions over the years the police have erroneously tried to shut down our taping events. We have heard them say if “you want me to talk to you, shut down the camera” or simply “you don’t have a right to tape” and a special favorite when Keith Sterkeson who is an abortion supporter, and a pro-lifer named Dan, and a police officer were being recorded by the pro-lifer; the officer turned to Sterkeson and said “tell him (Dan) not to record the sound”. How unprofessional is that?
In another incident on August 10th , a bottle was thrown at a pro-lifer. The license number of the assailant’s vehicle was given to the police. A swift response on the part of the police is expected. Today, coffee and bottles are the weapons the pro-aborts are using but what about tomorrow? Will it be acid, bricks, fire bombs? The vigilante terrorist attacks from the abortion supporters must be stopped now.
You Can’t Videotape
We, in the pro-life movement, hear this often from some in the police department and of course from those on the left who don’t want their despicable words and actions documented on film.
One can be assured that robbers, rapists, murderers, etc. would love to have all security cameras shut down. The pro-life citizens, in the past, have used our security cameras to document the criminal actions of the abortion supporters, i.e. the attack by Keith Sterkeson, a known pro-abortion supporter, at NIWC. On August 10 an irate pro-choice man launched an unprovoked attack on peaceful pro-life citizens who were exercising their right to protest the killing of the unborn. It is the pro-lifer’s “right to choose” to protest the decriminalization of the murder of the unborn. This particular irate pro-choice man could have chosen to ignore the protesters and drive on by; that would have been a good “choice”. Instead, he chose poorly. He decided to take the law into his own hands by coming in amongst the demonstrating citizens and try to force his views on them. In past years the police have viewed some of the videos from the security cameras used by the abortion mill. The building owner has over a dozen cameras going at all times. Since pro-lifers have been attacked and physically beaten, verbally assaulted, and struck by cars while at the abortion mill, pro-lifers have realized they must have mobile cameras running at all times for their own protection.
Abortion Supporters
Their acts of terrorism, these kinds of despicable behavior on the part of pro-abortion supporters, will be documented and the perpetrators of any crime will be prosecuted according to the law. It is our sincere hope that one day abortion on demand will pass away like the scourge of slavery passed away into history. So, too, one day abortion on demand will be a thing of the past. In the meantime, we demand equal protection under the law as we invoke the rights granted to us under the first amendment.

Irate Mother Abandons Her Children To Scold Pro-Lifers
With at least 40 sign holders at each of the three stops, we were able to reach drivers coming from all four directions and to hand out flyers that explain clearly and succinctly the purpose of our tours. These flyers describe each of the six pictures drivers are seeing as they pass by the large copies of these pictures. At one stop, a young mother came up to me and asked me what organization was conducting the display. She was writing on a clipboard and I assumed that she was a reporter. I told her that we were the Pro-Life Action League from Chicago, and to put a hyphen between Pro and Life, which she did. Then she told me that she had four crying children in her car (which she had clearly abandoned to come and talk to me) and that it was our pictures that had made them cry. She also said she was going to report us to the police.
Children Just Need a Calm Explanation - I told her that most children are curious about the pictures but that what they need is simply a calm explanation that these children have been hurt because their mother was either forced by someone to have an abortion or that she had decided herself that she didn’t want a baby. But, she should tell them, they were very much wanted and loved and that this would never happen to them. I also told her that sooner or later they are going to be confronted with the evil of abortion, and having seen these pictures, they will most likely be pro-life. I did fail to point out that we have warning signs before every set of signs, far enough away from the tour that anyone can turn to an alternate route. But nothing would satisfy her anyway, and that’s when she threatened to report us to the police. I could have told her that it is criminal to leave four children in a car without an adult, but she was in no mood for that. So I simply said to try to understand that we must show the victims of abortion and that by far the majority of people we reach are adults, or they wouldn’t be driving cars. I also told her we had already notified the police of our tour and that even they saw it as an exercise of our First Amendment Rights.
Foul-Mouthed Man Is Just One of Many Angry Rockford Pro-Aborts- In another public debate an angry man parked his car and approached one of our volunteers screaming foul words and reaching to take a camera away from one of our volunteers. When we said we would call the police for assault, he started to walk away, but quickly returned to rant until a police officer arrived and tried to calm him down. He was beside himself with hatred. And what did some angry pro-aborts throw at us? Coffee, bottled water, and a can of pop. Those were some of the negative reactions.
The Flip Side: Positive Reactions Outnumber Negative- But there were also many thumbs up, people leaning over to say, “Thanks for what you’re doing,” and “Keep up the good work!” In fact, we had so many positive reactions, thumbs up and drivers telling our people handing out leaflets that they were already pro-life, that we think the positive reactions outnumbered the negative. But whatever the response, we realize that we won’t find out until eternity just how much good we did in Rockford on that hot Tuesday. And that’s good enough for me and our crew of red-shirted volunteers.
